Seabury Hall senior Iona Asher has transformed her childhood memories on Maui into art work.

Every year, Seabury’s AP Art class showcases their pieces in the Cooper House under the teachings of Ms. Mcghee. Seniors are able to come up with intricate themes that depict ideas that are meaningful to them. Asher chose to capture Maui’s natural beauty and sacred landscapes through the medium of watercolor.

“It was really special to be able to transform the scenery I grew up with into something physical, it was important to me to tell a story with my pieces,” said Asher.

Seniors are given around 10 months to find a theme and create 10 pieces following their chosen medium.

“It seemed overwhelming at first,” noted Asher. “We first started to come up with our ideas in the spring of our Junior year.”

Asher added that she had been toying with the idea of Maui landscape for some time, as she “knew it was just the right thing to do.”

Although it seemed easy for her to pick an overarching theme, she found trouble picking her 15 landscape scenes. She added that she “took a lot of time picking out what areas to paint because [she] wanted it to be perfect and [represent] [her] theme.”

Asher, who has been creating pieces since she was very young, found the experience of AP art to be an “extremely fun course.” She states that this class offered at Seabury Hall is able to give st udents the opportunity to let their creative sides roam under a controlled environment with the help of AP Art teacher, Ms. Mcghee.

Due to personal circumstances, Ms. Mcghee was unable to attend the students’ art shows. When asked how this affected her performance, Asher stated that while it was difficult to not have her around at times, “it didn’t affect us that much because at this time of year, this class is mostly independent.”

Asher showcased her pieces at the second AP art show alongside seniors Makena Wolford and Makalani Carey.

Although pieces aren’t officially due to AP CollegeBoard until April, Asher has steadily worked hard this year and is only adding final touches to her portfolio.
